Bela Co jewelry pieces are made with 14k gold-filled, sterling silver or solid 14k gold to ensure your jewelry will last!  These are high quality metals and some care is suggested to ensure its longevity.  Your jewelry is meant to be worn and enjoyed - in general… you can just leave your pieces on and go about your life! LIVE in it!

In addition, you can take these simple steps to keep your jewelry looking its best!

14k Gold-Filled. Gold-filled jewelry is much higher quality than jewelry that is gold plated. When something is gold-filled, it has a thick layer of gold applied to a base metal. It is 100 to 100,000 times thicker than gold plating. Gold-filled, unlike gold plated jewelry, should not chip, tarnish or fade. Most people with metal sensitivities who can wear solid gold jewelry will find that they can also wear gold-filled jewelry.  You can expect your gold-filled jewelry to perform and feel much the same as solid 14k gold. It is an investment in quality without the tremendous price tag!

Proper care: When your jewelry is not being worn, store your jewelry in a safe and dry place (preferably a lined box) where it will not be tangled.  It can be worn to shower, swim and exercise although, as with all fine metals, it is suggested that you avoid extreme sweat, chlorine, harsh chemicals and other out of the 'normal' day to day conditions while wearing your jewelry. To clean your gold-filled piece, gently polish with a Sunshine jewelry polishing cloth. Alternatively, use a little bit of old-school white cream toothpaste and scrub gently with a toothbrush, then fully dry with a soft cloth. Or… stop into your local jewelry shop for a quick, professional touch up.

Sterling Silver.  Bela Co sterling silver is certified .925 sterling silver to ensure quality.  Over time, any sterling silver jewelry exposed to the environment will blacken. (Especially chlorine!) Sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals. It is these other metals, primarily copper, that make sterling silver tarnish. The copper reacts to moisture and sulfur in the air, causing the sterling silver take on a darker color. Silver tarnishes faster in areas with high humidity and air pollution. Chemicals like hairspray, perfume, deodorant, body lotion, and bleach can speed up the tarnishing process.

Proper Care: The best way to prevent silver from tarnishing is WEAR YOUR JEWELRY! Believe it or not, silver touching the skin is protected from tarnish by your natural skin oils. When you are not wearing your jewelry, it is best to store DRY sterling silver in an airtight plastic bag.  If tarnish does begin to show, cleaning it right away is best.  A polishing cloth will go a long way in keeping your silver shiny! You can also purchase a liquid silver shine jewelry cleaning kit or cream polish. Check out good old amazon! Like gold-filled metals, you can also stop into a jewelry store for a quick professional cleaning.  Again, with sterling, the best thing you can do is to PREVENT tarnish in the first place.  Do not store sterling in a humid bathroom. Keep it in a dry, airtight container when not being worn.

Fun Fact: Let’s say you’ve gone swimming in a heavily chlorinated pool and when you get out you realize your silver rings and cuff bracelets have turned… EEP! BLACK!! What to do?? Just keep wearing them! I speak from personal experience. Although it took a little over a week, slowly but surely, the oils on my skin turned them right back to their previous shiny silver state!
